Description: Mercer is a slim, lean young man, and not outstandingly tall. (About 5'10") He has a rather compact, athletic build from several years of hard labor around the settlement. Most of his muscles are in his legs and abdomen, but his arms aren’t really lacking either. Due to his all-consuming vanity, Mercer hasn’t let his physique slip an inch. He has also developed a mild tan which contrasts nicely with his hair. Tousled, ebony locks hang just over the nape of his neck and short bangs fall over his eyes, which are a very dark, bottomless brown, so much so that the pupils cannot be distinguished. Mercer carries himself with proud posture and has a strong presence when entering a room. On his left shoulder there is a tattoo of a treble clef, proof of his family craft.

Personality: Mercer is a cavalier, headstrong young man mainly driven by his immediate desires. He is high strung, impatient, impulsive, a free spirit whom does not think about the consequences when he does what he wants whenever he wants to do so. He is very temperamental and is very easily annoyed and frustrated. Taking offense without much provocation in addition t this doesn’t aid his argumentative, confrontational nature which often gets him into physical tussles and verbal battles.

Mercer is also, quite frankly, a smartass. He is bold, outspoken, arrogant and enjoys knocking others down a peg when he thinks they are getting out of line. A somewhat radical person, he will do anything to prove a point or to impress someone he likes. Manipulation is something that he has also taught himself to do over the years. He can con good merchants out of a few marks when bartering and finds it rather simple to trick his peers as well.

But for all of his pride, boasting and rebelliousness, Mercer is highly critical not only of others, but of himself more than anyone else, though he keeps this part of his personality hidden by a flamboyant charade of merry-making. He holds high expectations, is very hard on himself, and is always left wondering if someone actually liked him or not after a first meeting. While he exudes a devil-may-care demeanor, he really does mind what people think of him. If someone he meets dislikes him, he does all he can to be friends with them anyway. He wants what he can’t have. Usually feels guilty about his actions, but only long afterwards.

Weaknesses: Obviously, he lacks many scruples. Mercer rarely thinks of anyone beside himself, unless he is attracted to someone, in which case he is thinking of ways to get them for himself. He often finds the need to be dishonest just to liven up a situation. Difficult choices don’t come easily to him because of his tendency towards indecision. When he is annoyed, Mercer can be unreasonably aggressive, sometimes even looking for or provoking fights just to get rid of stress. Jumps to conclusions. Disregards personal space.

Strengths: Mercer can be rather charming when he wants to be and is a skilled flirt. He is a passionate person and puts forth a great deal of effort into his personal interests. When assigned a task, his vanity requires a high level of perfectionism. In fact, in those cases one could even call him ambitious, though he doesn’t actively care about achieving rank. He is more a “live in the now” person, loves to party (can certainly be the life of one) and is always up for anything fun or outrageous; he knows just how to have a good time.

Likes: Attractive people, alcohol, sex (preferably all three together), canines, bubbly pies, physical labor (it keeps him busy and in shape), rain, swimming, running, singing

Dislikes: People who don’t want to have dangerous fun, tattle-tales, prudes, children, when the weather is the same for more than a few days in a row, too much structure, stressful activities, not having enough time to himself, feeling like he has no way out of a situation

Sexuality: Opportunist, heterosexual, but very open-minded

Mannerisms: Mercer is very animated and usually talks with his hands. He fiddles with his hair when nervous and does things to make himself comfortable in new places, like toying with objects or sitting on furniture as if he owns it along with the whole room. Has a signature, furtive smirk that betrays when he is plotting something. Hums or taps his foot to an internal beat when bored.

Points of interest: Mercer is particularly good at cards and dice games when gambling is involved. Because he was raised by two musicians, he can sing (tenor) with proficiency and is comfortable speaking in public/addressing a crowd. Dancing is also another skill he as picked up and uses to woe the ladies. He also writes poety and his own songs, which he wouldn't hesitate to serenade a romantic interest with.

History: At the age of six, Mercer wasn't to pleased with being told he had to leave his home to go to another planet. Asleep for years? That didn't sound fun at all. When they arrived, Mercer was not a happy child, but he eventually got used to his new life on Pern and took to it with vigor. The firelizards and local fauna immediately fascinated him, so when the scientists managed to create some larger versions of them, Mercer was intensely interested. However, his largest interest was in music and he quickly learned to sing and to play many kinds of instuments, even how to make some.
